Why Cables Deserve a Careful Look
Lift cables link the springs to the bottom corners of the door. When one frays, jumps its drum or breaks, that corner loses support and the door tilts, jams or hangs partly open.
On newer homes, cables rarely wear through from age alone. Rough drum grooves, a loose bracket or a bent roller stem usually does the damage. We replace the cable and correct whatever caused it, so the repair lasts.
Clues a Cable Is in Trouble
One corner sits lower
A door that hangs crooked when raised or stalls on a slant often has a cable that has slipped or snapped on one side.
Visible fraying or kinks
Broken strands that look like tiny wires sticking out, or a cable that sits loose and curled, signal that it should be replaced soon.
Slack when the door is closed
A cable that droops instead of staying taut may be off its drum, which can allow it to tangle or the door to jam.
What the Repair Involves
- i
Secure and unload
Clamps hold the door steady while spring tension is let off with proper bars, which lets us deal with the loose cable without any sudden movement.
- ii
Inspect the pathway
Drums, brackets, bottom fixtures and nearby rollers are checked for the burrs, bends or loose parts that damaged the cable.
- iii
Replace in a pair
New cables of the correct length go on both sides, which keeps the load shared and the door travelling level.
- iv
Rewind and verify
Tension is reset, the door is balanced by hand and cycled several times to confirm the cables seat properly on their drums.
Cable Questions
Do both cables need replacing?
Yes, normally. Both cables have shared the work equally since the day the door went in, and one new cable beside a worn one can leave the door pulling unevenly. Replacing the pair is the tidier, longer-lasting repair, and it adds little extra work while the door is already supported.
Can I just push the cable back on the drum?
We would not suggest it. The cable is under spring tension, and a damaged strand or a roughened drum will simply let it jump off again, sometimes with a sudden jolt. Proper replacement and a drum inspection are safer, and they prevent the same fault from returning in a few weeks.
Is a frayed cable an urgent matter?
It deserves prompt attention. A cable that fails suddenly can drop one corner of the door, so avoid operating it. Describe what you can see when you phone, and the technician can tell you what the repair is likely to involve before arriving.
Noticing a Frayed Cable?
Keep the door closed and everyone clear of it for now. Share what you can see of the cable and we will explain how a replacement is carried out.
